Scrapbook Supplies: Just Getting Started?

Dec 27th, 2009 by admin

If you are just starting to search for scrapbook supplies and you are new to this leisure activity, you may be a small overwhelmed with the number of products that are available. Most scrapbookers start with a few basic supplies, and then add to their collection over time. If you are just getting started, here are the essentials you will need:

Scrapbook Album

There are many different styles and sizes of scrapbook albums. Many of these already come with page protectors. When you shop for an album, look to see if it is three ring binder style or similar style that will let you add additional pages over time.

Card Stock and/or Patterned Paper

Many people use a combination of card stock and patterned paper in their layouts, mixing and matching to make visual interest. Due to its sturdiness, most scrapbookers use card stock as a base for their layouts, then use patterned paper to add additional color and interest.

Cutting Tools

At the bare minimum, you should have a paper trimmer for cutting. As an alternative, you could use a craft knife, cutting mat, ruler and pencil. But, many of the scrapbooking paper trimmers are relatively inexpensive, and are much simpler and quicker to use than the manual method. It is also a excellent thought to keep a sharp pair of scissors handy to make hand cut elements for your layouts.

Adhesives

When you first go shopping for scrapbooking supplies, you may be surprised to find an entire aisle at your local craft store devoted specifically to adhesives. With so many choices, it can be hard to determine what you need. To preserve your photos, make sure you select adhesives that are acid free. Double sided tape is excellent to use for attaching photographs and strips of paper. Adhesive runners are also useful for attaching pictures and die cut shapes. Fine tip glue pens and glue dots are also excellent to use for attaching other elements to your layouts.

Fine Tip Pens for Journaling

When you scrapbook, it’s a excellent thought to add information about the event to the page. This is also known as journaling. Use fine tip pens for journaling, or if you prefer, use your computer and printer.

Additional Supplies

You really only need the above scrapbook supplies to get started. But, to add more visual interest to your layouts, you may also want to pick up a few more items. For example, you can make your photos more fascinating by using a corner rounder. Stickers, die cuts, ribbons, rubber stamps, and brads and eyelets also are fun ways to add more details to your layouts.

To get started with this leisure activity, you really only need a few basic scrapbook supplies. As your budget allows, you can add additional materials and tools over time.
